Bender
At the beginning of the movie we see John Bender filled with teenage angst. He is constantly challenging authority and outcast by almost all of his peers. Although it may seem that he is just being a typical rebellious teenager, Bender's actions are a reflection of the difficult life he faces at home.
As the child of an abusive alcoholic, Bender was forced to come of age faster than the other four members of "The Breakfast Club." Due to the fact that he has not grown up in a supportive home, like most of the other students, he has been forced to take care of himself from an early age. Bender is independent and capable of forming his own opinions, but immature in his lack of respect for others and indifference regarding the consequences of his actions.
Bender is unaware of what the others are going through, believing that he is the only student who faces serious struggles in his family life. As he gains insight into the struggles of his classmates, he realizes that their lives are not as perfect as he imagined. During his time in detention, Bender develops empathy for others and realizes that if he continues to rebel, he will end up the criminal that everyone expects him to be.
